Planet Drive, Jupiter Street intersection to reopen Monday after repairs

Broken water pipes forced crews from Destin Water Users to close the intersection of Planet Drive and Jupiter Street as repairs took place. The intersection is expected to reopen Monday.

Repairs have been completed at the intersection of Jupiter Street and Planet Drive after two broken water pipes forced the intersection to be closed.

"There was a leak in the sewer line, actually two leaks," Destin Water Users General Manager Richard Griswold told The Log. "One of the lines has been there 15-plus years, and the rain and rise in the water table put it over the edge."

For the past couple of weeks crews have been working to make the necessary repairs, which were complicated by the fact that one of the pipes lies roughly 14 to 15 feet underground, which is below the water table. Griswold said they had to "dewater" the site just to be able to work.

While the intersection is still closed, Griswold told The Log that crews have begun to fill in the spot and the area should be reopen to traffic fully no later than Monday.
