A Pelican Brief: Refuge saves entangled bird

The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge shared this report on Facebook: “This beautiful adult brown pelican was admitted (Monday) after being captured near Gulf Shore Drive in Destin. The bird was entangled in fishing line with five hooks embedded around its body. It suffered lacerations to its pouch and legs but will make a full recovery. This is another grim reminder of how improperly disposing line & hook can negatively affect wildlife of all kinds. This bird is one of the lucky ones having only suffered minor injuries.” The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership group Destin Forward is developing a monofilament fishing line recycling program as part of its class project to better protect our wildlife and environment. Stay tuned to The Log in coming weeks for more details.
