Cleaning for a Cause: Local church and businesses ready Destin YMCA

Chris Hart, otherwise known as ‘Grand Dude,’ pressure washed the fence at the Destin YMCA during a recent outreach day with Shoreline Church.

It was two days of pressure washing, painting, gardening and cleaning for more than thirty members of Shoreline Church on a recent weekend, as the group of volunteers worked to beautify the Destin YMCA.

“This is the third year that we’ve done it at the ‘Y,’” said Outreach Director, Lisa Buchman. “Our head pastor, Eric Partin, is actually on the board of directors of the YMCA, and we like to partner up with groups that are already doing something right.”

Volunteers from Shoreline’s Destin and Fort Walton Beach campuses spent five hours each day to help prepare the YMCA grounds for the upcoming summer programs.

Neighboring business, Home Depot donated $500 of supplies including, paint brushes, paint, stain and nails. Area businessman Danny Bradford of Lovejoy Properties brought pressure washers to help get the job done.

“We actually do a pretty wide variety of outreach groups,” said Buchman. “If there’s a need we pull together our resources and see how we can help.”

Buchman said that even though the weather was cold and gloomy, the volunteers were all smiles.

“It was all ages, there were a lot of the kids from our youth, but it was a good turn out. It was a lot of hard work but a lot of fun.”
