The message was… "every kid is an important part of the school, no matter what grade they are in."

Those were the words of the new Destin Middle School Principal Charlie Marello, who welcomed the new students during the Destin Elementary fourth grade graduation celebration. Entering the  room, there were funky glasses at every student’s chair with 2014 written on them.

“Our future’s so bright, we have to wear shades,” Marello said, and so they did.

The ceremony started with a special presentation by Destin Mayor Mel Ponder who announced the recipient of the Destin Mayor’s award and Councilman Jim Foreman who announced the recipient of the American Legion Post 296 awards.

Afterwards, each class presented a short movie were each student was asked the question… "What would you like to be when you grow up?" From a cartoonist to a whole list of imaginary professions, each student had a chance to share.

At the end of each presentation, the teachers had a brief and touching message for their class, followed by their recognition and the welcoming of Marello.

But the biggest news was when Marello announced the donation of new lockers to the next year's fifth graders, due to the generosity of donors that contributed money. The students then delighted their guest at the end of the program with their fourth grade song before getting funky and dancing along to the tune. Then it was their last time at their homerooms, were cake and water was waiting for them.

This is the first time that Destin Middle School has had all of the fifth graders on campus for an entire school year, as they used to be split between DMS and Destin Elementary School.
