UPDATE: Toddler dies after Labor Day near drowning

Investigators with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office say they were informed this morning that a toddler taken to an area hospital following a near drowning in Destin on Labor Day has died.

Two–year old Jayden Cartagena of 20 Moriarity Street in Fort Walton Beach was pulled from a spot near the western end of the Marler Bridge around 5 p.m. Monday after he was spotted floating face down in about two feet of water. A citizen performed CPR and the child was taken by medical helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, where he passed away Tuesday evening.

Family members say the boy had last been seen playing on the sand about six feet from the water’s edge

A two-year old Fort Walton Beach boy remains in critical condition following a near drowning Monday evening near the Marler Bridge in Destin.

Jayden Cartagena was pulled from the water on the bridge’s western end, near where bridge pilings start to enter the water to the north of the parking area, according to a press release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

A 29-year old Fort Walton Beach man helped bring the child ashore and began performing CPR.

Family members say Jayden had been playing near the water and they realized a few moments later he was missing. He was located floating in two feet of water around 5 p.m.

Jayden was initially transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center before being taken by medical helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
