City to lease surplus properties

The city aims to lease out two surplus properties; one at 112 Sibert Avenue and the other at 908 Airport Road.

The city will soon have two surplus properties available to lease after Monday night's City Council meeting.

"Short-term tenants will provide revenue to the city that would otherwise require city resources," Public Information Manager Doug Rainer told The Log.

Up for lease are properties at 112 Sibert Avenue and 908 Airport Road.

The 0.51-acre parcel on Sibert sits just behind the Destin Community Center and the 0.48-acre parcel along Airport Road sits next to Airport Veterinary and was purchased during the settlement agreement with the proposed developers of The Runway, which would have been the city's first strip club.

Both properties have shown interest of late, according to city documents. The Sibert property has been proposed for use as a temporary parking lot, while the Airport Road property has been proposed for use for auto sales.

By leasing the properties, the city would be able to have an additional income stream. The city would lease the properties on a short-term basis of no more than five years.

They would be leased in an "as-is" state, giving a leaseholder the ability to make improvements they see fit to the properties.

It's anticipated the city could see an annual income from a short-term lease in the range of $15,000 to $25,000 for each property.

The city will now draft request for proposals (RFPs) for the properties and any proposals would be brought back to the city council for review.
