The Library is Destin’s Imagination Station: Kids summer programs ready to launch

Want to take your kids on an African Safari this summer? How about an Antarctic exploration? The Destin Library is offering several programs to keep your kid’s imaginations running wild all summer long with weekly events such as Katie’s Kids and a brand new program called Every Hero Has a Story.

“Each week is a different hero’s theme,” Youth Services Librarian Will Rogers said of the new program. “I am supplementing the theme with relevant crafts, books, music and many weeks with a guest.”

Rogers told The Log that some of the heroes highlighted will include health heroes with special guests from the Okaloosa Health Department, animal heroes featuring Nonie’s Animal Encounters and community heroes with a visit from Mayor Mel Ponder.

“During this June and July scenario, there will also be two performances,” he added. “Anna Moo, a Grammy award winning children’s musician, and Mr. Mac a local teacher and musician.”

The Every Hero Has a Story summer program is separated into two age groups with children age six to 12 gathering on Mondays and children age five and under meeting on Thursdays, both programs begin at 9:30 a.m. and last about an hour.

The library will also be hosting a special summer series called Katie’s Kid’s Around the World each Friday for children aged five to eight.

“Katie’s Kids will be on a first-come first-served basis as space is limited,” said Rogers. “She is selecting books and crafts to go along with different geographical themes.”

Both summer programs will begin June 10 with a celebratory kick-off party at the Destin Library at 1 p.m.

“The kick-off event is an opportunity for parents and kids to come register,” said Rogers. “There will be free face painting and we will be handing out our reading reward program logs and a number of reading lists will also be available from various schools.”
