Happy Birthday Destin Library! Celebrating 75 years of service to the city
Get ready for some good old fashioned fun at the Destin Library this Friday as the clock will be turned back to the 1940s to celebrate the era the beloved book center was first created.
“We will have music from that era, and an open house-style event with an old fashioned ice cream social,” said Librarian Jurate Burns. “When visitors come in they aren’t going to see the computers, we are going to remove any visible signs of modern technology.”
The event will pay homage to the dedicated founders of the Destin library as a small historical display will be set up for visitors to peruse.
“Most people today do not realize that it was a total volunteer operation until 1989 when the city took it on,” said Burns. “Most of the original founders have passed away but their children are still alive.”
In addition to the display, local singer and musician Cheryl Jones will be on-hand to perform from 4 to 5 p.m.
The whole city is invited to come out, grab a scoop, and celebrate this special milestone between 2 and 5 p.m. Aug. 21.
“It’s going to be a fun celebration,” said Burns. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
