Keep It Simple Sweetie is more than a name for the new Destin bakery in the Target shopping center, it’s a lifelong motto. Owners and sisters-in-law Liz Berta and Andrea Lowery have been working hard all summer to prepare K.I.S.S. Bakery for it’s grand opening next week and said they hope keeping it simple will be a recipe for success.

“Our goal is to bring dessert back to what it was,” said Berta. “Small, simple, homemade and affordable; a dessert and not a meal.”

“Everything is made 100-percent by scratch and whatever is in season is what we will use,” added Lowery.

Long-time Destin locals, the two women said inspiration to open the bakery stemmed from a love of baking and family.

“I’ve always helped my mom,” said Berta. “I’ve done it since I was a kid. There are nine in my family and I’m number eight, so we always made Thanksgiving pies together… Christmas bread and cookies and all the birthday cakes we grew up on.”

“And I always loved to eat Liz’s baked goods,” said Lowery. “I like decorating all of the baked goods and the treats, that’s my fave.”

That partnership of baking and decorating is the key to their business, said Berta.

“I’m all about the baking,” she said.

“And I’m all about the presentation,” Lowery said finishing her sentence.

The bakery’s menu reflects the motto with simple and sweet treats ranging from pies and cakes to brownies and cream puffs.

“I’m excited about our brownies,” said Lowery. “My favorite is the white chocolate brownies, and I’m excited to try our lime-coconut brownies.”

As for the name, Berta said it’s a mixture of her three great loves.

“I love math, baking and music but I couldn’t think of a way to combine all three until now,” she said. “It’s actually a military term, ‘Keep It Simple Stupid.’ My math teacher used to say it and it stuck with me.”

The women explained the focus of their bakery is to bring families and friends together to relax and to offer an option of homemade treats for the classroom or the office.

“We just love to bake and love to make things yummy and sweet,” said Berta. “My big thing is, I love to make people happy. I love to see people sit down with a piece of pie and coffee and just take a break for a minute.”
