Loren Page, Michele Kinlock and Rebecca Pavlic Edge are the heart behind Pavlic's Florist & Gifts, the original florist shop in Destin.

Rebecca Pavlic Edge is well known in Destin; she has watched many residents grow up, created flower arrangements from proms to weddings for generations and even for many a loved one’s funeral. In a way her florist shop, Pavlic’s Florist & Gifts, has been a beacon of life in this city ever since it opened in 1972.

“I still have customers that had ordered from me that first week I was open in Destin,” said Edge. “We love our customers, and they know we care about them. We’ve been there through the good times and the bad and when you are there for your customers that means a lot.”

Pavlic’s originally opened in Fort Walton Beach in 1970 with Edge’s mother Jeanie Pavlic as the floral arranger and her father Ivan Pavlic as the delivery man.

“My mother originally started with artificial flowers then moved on to fresh flowers and my dad was the delivery driver,” said Edge. “He will be 96 years old this year and he swears if he could drive he would still drive the deliveries.”

In 1972, Edge opened the Destin Pavlic’s in a trailer on the harbor along Highway 98.

“I was the original florist in Destin,” she said. “We started out in a 12 by 24 trailer across from the Destin Post Office right next door to where the Red Door Saloon is today. We were right on top of the hill, back when everybody knew everybody and you would meet at the post office and say, ‘Hey, how are you today?’”

The atmosphere at Pavlic’s is much the same today as it was in Edge’s memory, as customers still come into the store just to see her and celebrate new milestones in their lives.

“To have a family-run business in this day and age is something to be proud of,” said Edge. “I love coming in to work every day because you never know what the day will bring.”

This week, Pavlic’s will celebrate their 43rd Anniversary and in honor of their own milestone they are inviting the public to stop by and celebrate with cake and coffee, and maybe even a flower. Stop by Pavlic’s Florist & Gifts at 116-A Benning Drive on Friday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate and congratulate the Pavlic’s team of florists.

“We are just especially glad we are alive and still here,” said Edge. “The good lord above has really blessed us over the years; Without him we would not have weathered all of the storms and we just want to say thank you.”
