An angry LSU fan who was turned away from a Destin restaurant during Saturday’s game against the Florida Gators has sparked a heated exchange on social media.

The fan, a Mississippi man named Don Bass, was apparently in town for a wedding when he and his wife, along with another couple, stopped at Harry T’s.

Their visit coincided with that of an alumni club from the University of Florida, which has been a regular customer of the Destin restaurant for years, according to restaurant management.

“We’ve built a great rapport with these individuals,” said Lou Longo, assistant manager at the restaurant. “They make money and it goes directly to the University of Florida scholarship fund."

The LSU fans, who ended up at another Destin restaurant, wrote a letter to the restaurant and posted their complaints on Facebook.

A member of the management team responded by explaining that they were honoring the request of the alumni club, but that the staff was not intentionally favoring Gator fans.

By Wednesday evening, an apology had been posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page, apologizing to LSU fans and explaining their reasons for turning the individuals away.

Longo said he’d received at least 40 phone calls about the exchange on Wednesday, but he hoped the apology posted on Facebook would help to set the record straight.
