It’s a tradition at Destin Elementary School that every year on the last day of school before Christmas break The Grinch makes a visit during lunch time.

This year students at DES were anticipating The Grinch’s arrival with great eagerness as they had been voting for over a month to nominate either Principal Al Gardner or OCSO Deputy Sonya Shepard to don the green suit. The nominations came in the way of monetary donations to the Random Acts of Kindness Kids (RAKK) club who used the money to purchase pajamas and gifts for children in need at the school and gifts for seniors in a Destin area nursing home.

When the votes were tallied up earlier this week, the grand total raised from The Grinch fundraising event was $357.28 with Principal Al Gardner winning over OCSO Deputy Sonya Shepard by $40.60.

Thursday saw the cafeteria of children burst into cheers as the green character came through the door carrying with him a bag of candy canes to give out. Students gathered around to hug the furry Grinch and laugh as he pointed and posed like the beloved Dr. Suess first portrayed him.
