According to a study conducted by Thumbtack Inc., an online database that connects consumers with business professionals in various industries, Florida has the highest interest in personal trainers in the nation.

“What we found is that Florida is far and away the most fitness obsessed state in the country, scoring a perfect 100 on our Fitness Index with more personal training requests per capita than any other state,” reads an article on Thumbtack’s website.

Local personal trainer Glenda Jernigan, who trains clients at Destin Health & Fitness Club said that she believes Florida’s hot weather plays a part in making Florida the most fitness-minded state.

“Personally I think it’s because of all the outdoor activities and how much time we spend in swim suits,” she said. “I think people are just more aware of what their bodies look like because we have so many more warmer months here and it leads to a more active lifestyle.”

Jernigan added that she believes Florida clients prefer personal trainers to other fitness regimes because of it’s customization.

“The one-on-on instruction, the motivation, the accountability; It’s a commitment,” she said. “When you are training somebody it’s eyes on the whole time and you can customize the instruction for that person and their individual needs.”

Using data pulled from tens of thousands of personal trainer requests in 2015, Thumbtack also discovered that rates for personal trainers in Florida fluctuate throughout the state.

“Our data scientists also looked at numbers from the 176 biggest cities and metro areas in the Sunshine State. While you might expect consumers in Miami Beach, one of the 20 most expensive ZIP codes in the country, to spend the most on their personal training sessions and have the absolute highest prices, that wasn’t the case.”

In fact three local spots landed on the list of 10 most expensive cities for personal trainers in Florida: Santa Rosa Beach ranked second highest in the state with an average of $59.55 per hour, Miramar Beach ranked seventh with an average $53.85 and Destin came in ninth with an average of $53.76.

The reason for the higher prices?

“Popular Florida tourist destinations like Destin…visitors there were willing to shell out more for training sessions,” claimed the site.

Jernigan said that her rates fall in line with others in the area ranging between $50 and $55 per hour. When asked why she thinks Destin falls on the pricier end of the scale, Jernigan agreed with the Thumbtack analysis.

“I think the influx of tourists could affect it, if there is a difference, and maybe the cost of living here but we are right at market prices in the area,” she said.

However, it is not all bad news for Destin locals. Given that Thumbtack is nationwide, their research also revealed that Florida as a whole averages lower rates for personal trainers than the national average.

“It’s cheaper to hire a personal trainer in Florida than in many other parts of the country,” the article reads. “The average price for a personal trainer across all of Florida was $45.52, while the national average was $52.92.”
