The Destin Fire Control District participated in a training session with the Okaloosa County Hazardous Material team on Thursday at Station 9 in Destin. The regional hazmat team, based at Ocean City Station 2, can be called out during emergencies such as hazardous spills, heavy rescue situations, urban search and rescue or for homeland security measures.

“Each department in Okaloosa County pays a fee to have us here,” said Capt. Mike Taylor. “We are a regional team so we work with Santa Rosa and Walton counties and can be called by the State.”

During the training, Taylor gave seven Destin firefighters a tour of the hazmat truck dubbed the “Masters of Disaster.” He also answered questions of where tools and safety items were stored on the truck and how they can be used in emergency situations.
