Destin-Emerald Coast Senior Games is hosting their second annual event across the city throughout the month of February. With a line up of 15 different sports, the games offer seniors who are still young at heart, the chance to get active and stay competitive.

“It emphasizes healthy and active life styles for men and women ages 50 and over,” said Pat Markey who helped coordinate the games. “It’s for ages 50 to infinity and we split them into five year increments so you compete with people in your own age area.”

Last year, the inaugural year for Destin 232 seniors participated, a number Markey said he hopes to double this year.

“Both locals and snowbirds get involved, it’s a good way to get them all together,” he said. “Numbers are a little bit higher with snowbirds than locals.”

When asked which of the 15 events is the most popular sports with the Destin crowd, Markey didn’t hesitate, “Pickleball, track, and tennis,” he said.

Finalists from the Destin games can move on to the state level this year to be held in Clearwater. For more information visit http://cityofdestin.com/index.aspx?nid=260 or call the Destin Community Center at 654-5184.
