Last week local gardener Ron Sanstead was surprised to find something huge in the small garden that surrounds his business Flutterby Antiques and Uniques.

“It’s a whopper for sure, about four or five pounds,” he said of the large sweet potato he grew. “The story about them is I planted them three years ago and every year in the fall I pick the ones you can see visibly but I leave the roots. It’s kind of fun growing them because they fill in the spots that don’t grow well. When they start getting big like that they start poking up out of the ground.”

Sandstead said he plans to eat the huge potato in his favorite soup, a sweet potato andouille sausage soup made by his wife Michelle.
