On Monday, Destin resident Rebecca Stearns literally tripped over this boat buried in the sand near the East Jetty. She spent more than an hour trying to uncover it.

A Destin woman hoping to take pictures of the sunset Monday night stumbled on a bit of a mystery instead.

“I tripped, went down, thought it was an airplane,” Rebecca Stearns said of the large object buried in the sand near the East Jetty. “We were joking, ‘It’s Amelia Earhart’s airplane.” ”

Actually, after spending an hour digging in the sand, she discovered it was the front half of a boat. She got half of the vessel registration number — 257B1 — and continued to dig until she cut her hand. Then she used the bill of her cap to continue to try to unbury the vessel.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” she said of the discovery. “I go out there all the time and take pictures. I couldn’t even tell you in the four years I’ve been here how often I’ve been out there.”

Coast Guard Station Destin was notified of her find and planned to look into it. That was the first they’d heard of it, according to Coast Guard personnel.

Stearns is hoping that by sharing photos and her story, the owner might be located.

“It would be kind of cool to find out what happened,” she said. “Hey, we found your boat!”
