New juice bar opens in Destin Commons
A new juice bar has opened up in the Destin Commons and its tasty, yet healthy food and drink options are designed to wow even the most skeptical of foodies.
Formula Fresh offers cold-pressed juices, smoothies, super food bowls, premium coffee, house-made nut milks, bagels, wraps and salads.
“We wanted to create a welcoming environment where we can teach people about super foods,” said Owner and Founder Jennifer Gizzi. “We offer different ways to incorporate that into your food so you can get really nutrient-rich foods into your diet daily, that’s very important to us.”
“It’s cool to see the burst of energy that is starting to happen in this area,” added General Manager Brandy Cerny. “We are just on the starting edge of this health and wellness movement in Destin.”
Gizzi, a South Walton local, said that she got her start in juicing while living in Chicago.
“I started juicing three years ago while I was pregnant because I wanted to make sure I was getting my nutrients in my diet,” she said. “There was a little juice shop called The Green Corner in Chicago and I fell in love with it so I bought my own juicer. When I moved back down here, there wasn’t anything like that here so I started juicing for friends and family and then at the farmer’s market.”
Formula Fresh products were a hit at the Rosemary Beach Farmer’s Market, Gizzi said, and pretty soon she opened up her first storefront location in Sandestin and then her second along 30A.
The Destin Commons location will be the local company’s third location, and Gizzi said there are some new menu items premiering in Destin. The addition of super food bowls highlight the healthy antioxidants found in acai berries and pitaya or dragon fruit and have already made a splash at the Destin store.
“We are the only place in the area that offers this,” said Gizza. “We have four super food bowls and a lot of people have never heard of them before, but when they try them, they come back every day because that was the best thing they have ever eaten.”
Gizzi said so far the most popular bowl has been The Yummy, which features blended acai berries, bananas and house-made almond milk topped with peanut butter, cacao nibs, bananas, strawberries and hemp granola.
“We all know that fruits and vegetables are healthy for us, but I like to think that we provide an easy, nutritious, tasty way to get your fruits and veggies in,” she said.
As for the recipe process, Gizzi explained that is the most important thing she does, aligning health and taste to create quality products.
“With my background in nutrition I formulate all of the recipes myself using only natural sugars,” she said. “I use sugars such as those found in dates, but not in huge amounts. We add as low sugar content as we can possibly formulate with it still tasting amazing. We want people to leave here knowing, ‘Hey, you can eat healthy and it tastes really good.’”
