Destin Mayor Scott Fischer sent a letter to Sheriff Larry Ashley this week praising the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the law enforcement that “serves our great city.”

In the letter, Fischer expressed gratitude towards Ashley for his leadership of the city’s law enforcement.

“As mayor of the City of Destin, in this time of unrest towards all law enforcement I pledge mine and the City of Destin’s unwavering support of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office as well as all law enforcement that serves our great city,” he wrote in the letter.

Fischer told The Log his letter was motivated by the tense dialogue happening nationally about law enforcement.

“I felt the sheriff is doing an outstanding job,” Fischer said. “With all the things going on around the country, including Black Lives Matter, he needs our unwavering support.”

Fischer said a concerned citizen stood up at the most recent city council meeting and suggested the city show support for law enforcement, and the council unanimously agreed.

“Our law enforcement officers are blessed to live in a county with such genuine, widespread community support,” Ashley said in a written statement in response to the mayor’s letter. “We are extremely appreciative of how our citizens stand shoulder to shoulder with us through good times and bad.”
