Dick’s Sporting Goods, a Pennsylvania-based sporting goods store, is still planning on coming to Destin.

Steve Shmidt, interim community development director for city of Destin, said the city had approved a Minor Tier 1 development at 15001 Emerald Coast Parkway, near the Beall’s shopping center, and was currently reviewing a request to amend the development order.

The request would allow the developers to demolish an additional 14,675 square feet of retail space in order to replace it with a new 50,018 square foot retail space.

“We’re just waiting for information from them,” Shmidt said. “The ball is in their court.”

Shmidt added that there was a problem with the parking lot lighting being too tall. The current lights are 39 feet, 6 feet taller than the city’s code requires for light poles.

Property owner Park Grimmer must change the lighting, or go before the Board of Adjustments and request code relief for the light poles, before development can move on.

Calls to Dick’s Sporting Goods and Grimmer were not returned as of press time.

If it is eventually completed, it will be the only Dick’s store in Okaloosa County. The closest stores are in Pensacola and Panama City.
