There are a lot of moving parts required to run a city. This Thursday, the City of Destin is inviting everyone to come out to its open house and meet each one of those moving parts, from staff to elected officials to volunteers.

The open house event is held each year in conjunction with City Government Week. This year, however, will be different, according to Destin City Manager Carisse LeJeune.

“This year we decided to make it a little fun,” LeJeune said. “We went ahead and put a theme to this year’s open house which is ‘it takes a fishing village’. We held a contest in house and asked everyone to participate and come up with ideas for the theme.”

To go along with the theme, each city department will have a booth that is decorated in a fishing theme. The city manager’s booth, for example, will be the ship’s wheel, “because we chart the waters for the city organization”. The city clerk is ship’s log, because they take care of documentation for the city.

“We’re also going to have a fun participatory game for everyone who comes, called ‘go fish for hidden treasure’,” LeJeune said. “Each department and partner has come up with a ‘fish nugget’ a factoid about the city or department.”

There will also be a free fish fry and a free document shredding event, along with other games, events and informational activities.

Nancy Weidenhamer, chairperson of the Public Works and Public Safety Committee, said her group will have a booth at the open house, where they will be giving away a free bicycle donated from Wal-Mart in accodance with their focus on pedestrian safety.

Weidenhamer said this the second year her committee will have a booth at the event, and she encouraged everyone to come and see how the world’s luckiest fishing village gets things done.

“I think a lot of people would really be surprised at what the city does on a day to day basis,” she said. “I can’t speak for everybody, but I would say from my personal feelings, a lot of people don’t really understand what the different departments are or what they do.”

City of Destin Public Information Manager said the event serves another important purpose.

“It’s also our opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many, many volunteers who work with the city throughout the year,” Rainer said.

The open house will be held this Thursday, October 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the DestinCommunity Center.
