BIRD TALK: Happy New Year snowbirds and locals
It’s time to send out (or kick out) the old and bring in the new year. Some people may be happy to see 2016 end; others not so much. Whatever your thoughts, there is a new year on the horizon and a chance to do things better, differently, more completely or just to try something new because the time is right.
Speaking of doing something new (or better), how about becoming a member of the Destin Snowbird Club? If you have not been a member before, this could be your “something new” for the New Year. If you have been a member before, perhaps you could do “something better” by volunteering your talents and time to the club in some capacity as an active volunteer. The club is in need of people to assist in a variety of ways both this season and next season.
For next season, the job of publicity director is open for anyone interested in helping to keep the membership and community of Destin informed of the club’s events and successes. No special talent is needed. In fact, if you can write a letter home to your kids, you are qualified for the job. A New Orleans Mardi Gras Trip chairperson for the February 2018 trip is also needed. The prize committee could use some help for the very important job of gathering donated prizes from our very generous vendors. Please consider helping our club with your commitment of support.
The club is gearing up for the BIG REGISTRATION, which will be held at The Roost (Destin Community Center) on Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 1-3 p.m. This is a busy time, so plan to come and get in a single file line, fill out your information card (one per couple) accurately and have your cash or U.S. check for $8 per person made out to the Destin Snowbird Club (no Canadian checks, please). Volunteer hosts will be in place to answer your questions and to point you in the right direction.
Once your membership fee is paid and you have your official badge, you will be able to sign up for a variety of activities (Harbor Boat Cruises, Soundsations Concert, Fashion Show, the Valentine’s Dinner Dance, and club activities). You will be given a schedule of meetings and activities to keep you informed. Regional golf courses will be present to provide information and incentives to lure you to their courses.
On the way down the hall of the Community Center as you exit to leave, you will be able to enter the Food Room where a few of our vendors will be providing samples of their excellent food. Badges must be worn to enter this room. This year, the following vendors will be serving: Saltwater Restaurant's Crab Trap, Surf Hut and Floyd’s; O’Quigley’s Seafood Steamer and 790 on the Gulf. Members are urged to sample the cuisine and then make room for others as they enter the room.
For those needing to get items out of DSC storage, the locker will be open from 2-3 on Jan. 3, then again from 8-9 a.m. on Jan. 7 and 14.
Please check the website at www.destinsnowbirds.org for further detailed and updated information. Information is provided each week in the Saturday edition of The Destin Log and the Sunday Northwest Florida Daily News.
Happy New Year to everyone from the Destin Snowbird Club.
