Gun left in front of councilwoman's home

Almost a year after Destin City Councilwoman Prebble Ramswell received a death threat against her daughter in the mail, another suspicious incident occurred in front of her home.

On May 10, Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputies responded to Ramswell’s home after a school bus driver found a rifle in front of the mailbox. The gun turned out to be a Daisy Red Rider BB gun, according to an offense report from the Sheriff’s Office.

“It could have just been a coincidence or another warning,” said Ramswell. “To have this happen so close to my home, it’s very interesting to say the least.”

On July 25, 2016, Ramswell found a letter in her mailbox telling her to resign from city council or her daughter will be gone.

“There were no sign of the (BB) gun being dropped or falling out of a car. … It looks like it was placed there.” she said. “There was also another BB gun and a knife sharpener found two houses down.”

The offense report said the BB gun was not loaded and there were no witnesses around who could have seen who dropped the gun on the side of the road. Deputies also noticed Ramswell had installed a video camera on her garage facing towards the mailbox, but it was not turned on at the time of the incident.

Ramswell said a partial finger print was found on the note that was mailed to her home.

“I went in (the Sheriff’s Office) to get finger printed so I can be ruled out, but they could not determine if it was mine or not,” she said. “I have hired a forensic expert to evaluate the handwriting”

The initial case remains open and the Sheriff's Office is waiting for some evidence results to come back from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson.

“At this point, there isn’t any sort of connection between the two cases.” Nicholson said.

Ramswell said it’s frustrating how long it's taking to get answers for a crime of this nature.

“A $ 25,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator,” she said.
