It's that time of year again and the city of Destin wants to make sure residents understand all of the services available to make this year's spring cleaning easy and convenient.

There have been a few changes since last year, all for the good, thanks to the city's partnership with Waste Management.

Important note: Be sure to have carts, bulk items and yard waste by the road by 6 a.m. of the service day to ensure pickup. If your service was missed, please call 850-862-7141. All waste items (household garbage, recycling, bulk waste and yard waste) must be placed curbside in front of each property, not across the street or combined with a neighbor's waste, in order for it to be picked up.

All services listed below are included in residential solid waste service unless otherwise specified.

Bulk items no longer require a call for special pickup. Items such as chairs, couches, furniture, white goods, etc. (refrigerant, gas tanks, etc. must be removed) will be picked up on Mondays and is limited to six cubic yards or 75 pounds per pickup weekly. Items not accepted: tires, batteries, paints, oils, construction debris, chemicals of any kind, Freon, rocks, sand, gravel, dirt, logs, carpet, hazardous or medical waste.

Yard waste is picked up curbside every Friday and includes tree limbs, leaves, lawn clippings, etc . Be sure when placing these items curbside that they are clear of storm drains to prevent debris from entering the stormwater containment system. Below are specific details related to how yard waste must be left for pickup.

• Leaves/lawn clippings and small twigs must be canned or bagged and shall not weigh in excess of 50 pounds per container or bundle.

• Tree limbs must be stacked and shall not be in excess of 6 feet in length or 4 inches in diameter. Items larger than these specifications require a special pickup and charges may apply. Please call 850-862-7141 for pricing and to schedule a pickup.

• Total volume per each yard waste service day shall not exceed 2 cubic yards — approximately the amount that can be placed in the bed of a standard pickup truck. If total volume exceeds these specifications, the remainder will be picked up on the next scheduled yard waste service day.

If you receive a notification tag, your yard waste may not meet the requirements. Please call 850-862-7141 for more information.

Household garbage and recycling is picked up weekly. Recyclable items must be placed in the 96-gallon recycling cart. Do not bag the items. Recycling instructions are printed on the yellow lid. The schedule is:

• Household garbage on Tuesday and Friday

• Recycling on Tuesday

The recycling cart must be placed curbside next to the regular garbage cart.

Hazardous waste disposal is not a curbside service. It is managed by Okaloosa County. Hazardous items include car batteries, paint, oil, computers, and other similar items. Residents can drop these items off for free in Fort Walton Beach at 80 Ready Ave. Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary. For more information, call 850-301-2013.
