Big trucks rule the day in Destin

Staff reports

The rumble of diesel engines and tooting horns carried the morning at the Destin Community Center, where the city held its 21st annual Big Truck Day.

The annual event is designed to give children a chance to explore some of the big working vehicles they see in their community and talk to the drivers of those trucks about their jobs.

"It's just for the kids to enjoy and see all the awesome vehicles we have in the community," said Beatriz Miller, recreation program coordinator with the city of Destin.

This year's event had vehicles ranging from bucket and ladder trucks to excavators, tow trucks, all-terrain vehicles and boats.

Miller said children are really engaged in the event.

"The hands-on is the biggest thing," said Miller. "They want to be able to get inside the car, they want to ask so many questions of the drivers."
