Ava Smith and Izzy Douglas combined for 14 strikeouts to lead the Destin Marlins in a 6-3 victory over the visiting Davidison Panthers in middle school girls softball action.

Smith, an eighth grader, pitched the first five innings, striking out 11 and walking four. With the sun starting to set on the game, sixth grader Douglas finished up in the sixth inning with three strikeouts, two hits and two hit batters.

“I think today was a lot better,” said Destin Coach Kati O’Brian as the team walked off the field. “We hit the ball a lot harder and we were more patient at the plate. We weren’t overly excited and going after a lot of garbage, so I think overall they did good.”

After shutting the Panthers down in the top of the first, Destin came in and put four runs on the board. Douglas walked and scored on a double from Smith. The next four batters walked with three runs slipping in home for a 4-0 start.

In the second, Smith gave up one walk and then rang up three strikeouts.

In the bottom half, Destin strung together four hits to put two runs on the board. Olivia Payne, Douglas, Smith and Blakely York each got hits to put the Marlins up 6-0.

In the next couple of innings, neither team scored.

In the top of the sixth, Destin made some changes in the lineup and the Panthers managed to put three runs on the board before Douglas worked her way out of the inning.

“Our defense did well and made a couple of good plays in the field,” O’Brian said.

As for the substitutes, “they buckled down and did the job,” O’Brian said.

“Izzy came in and cleaned up on the mound. She did everything she could and made it happen. And we wound up shutting them down 6-3.

“Overall they did well,” she added.
