COVID-19 deaths in 8 county Northwest Florida region top 300

Optimistic numbers reported early in the week for new COVID-19 cases and deaths resulting from the virus have given way to the stark reality that the state and Northwest Florida remain firmly in its grip.

After two straight days of reports of less than 2,000 new cases in the state and deaths in the double digits, on Thursday the Florida Department of Health reported more than 2,500 new cases and 211 more deaths. 

The number of new cases remained relatively stable across the eight-county region that includes Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, Bay, Washington, Holmes, Gulff and Franklin, but with 10 new fatalities reported Thursday, the death toll crossed the 300 threshold and stands now at 305.

Okaloosa County reported four new deaths, Santa Rosa three, Walton two and Washington one. All but one of those who passed were 70 years old or older. Walton County reported the death of a 41-year-old man who had been diagnosed with the virus Sept. 8.
