The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened on Interstate 10 on Sunday near mile marker 64, but was not discovered until Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-10 between State Roads 85 and 285, according to the FHP.

About 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, a passerby saw an unknown object and called 911, FHP reported.

A preliminary investigation determined that a car was towing a trailer, which was traveling eastbound on I-10 on Sunday at an unknown time.

The driver, a 65-year-old woman from Wewahitchka, lost control and traveled into the thickly wooded median, FHP said.

The car overturned and came to a rest on the driver's side. Both occupants were trapped in the vehicle. The driver suffered critical injuries, and her passenger, an 81-year-old woman, also from Wewahitchka, died from her injuries, according to the FHP.

The passenger was not wearing a seat belt.

Eastbound traffic was routed through Crestview for more than an hour until an outside lane opened up late Wednesday morning.

FHP is continuing to investigate.
