Restaurant news: Jamaican food comes to Melbourne, Foo Bar reopens, 15 years of Raglan Road

Kamal Philibert is in the process of opening Philibert's Kitchen, a takeout Jamaican restaurant, in a Shell station on Wickham Road in Melbourne.

Going Jamaican with Philibert's Kitchen

For Kamal Philibert, food is as much about the heart as it is the stomach.

For the past couple of years, he has operated Philibert's Kitchen as a catering business, providing Jamaican food for community events, parties and funerals.

For his mother Sandra, preparing the food of her native land is therapeutic as she battles breast cancer.

Kamal hopes to have a Philibert's Kitchen open for takeout inside the Shell station at 3676 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, by the end of the year (more on that as we learn more). Until then, he continues to cater events and feed the community.

Philibert's Kitchen will serve meals at 2827 Lipscomb St., Melbourne from 3 p.m. until the food runs out on Sunday.

The revamped Foo Bar opened last Friday with a DJ in downtown Melbourne.

Open at last

It's been a long few months for Foo Bar, but the downtown Melbourne bar has finally reopened.

After closing in March because of COVID-19, owner Kimberly Dutton began remodeling work while the business was devoid of customers. She was unable to reopen in early September when Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted restrictions on bars because she needed time to restock and restaff.

The bar is now open with revamped outdoor seating. Dutton said she is still tweaking the hours and she determines when customers want to visit.

Foo Bar is at 816 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne. Call 321-728-7179.
