DeFUNIAK SPRINGS — A former Atlanta attorney is facing felony charges in Walton County after he allegedly defrauded a local company out of almost $73,000, according to a news release from the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Matthew Dickason, 45, was extradited to Walton County earlier this month following an investigation of missing funds from an unnamed Miramar Beach title company. According to the news release, the company handles real estate closings and escrow accounts with earnest money for buyers who are scheduled to close on a property along County Road 30A.

On May 18, 2019, the complainant noticed a $72,920.58 payoff had been wired to Dickason, the former owner of the company, the release said. The victim told investigators Dickason was no longer the owner of the company and was currently the managing partner for Dickason Law Group based in Atlanta.

The investigation that followed revealed Dickason abused his position as an attorney and the managing partner of a real estate law firm in order to fraudulently redirect a wire transfer for $72,920.58, according to the WCSO.

The money in the account had been intended to pay off the mortgage of a Santa Rosa Beach property. Instead, Dickason redirected the funds to his own bank account on April 22, 2019, the release said.

This bank account only had an average balance of about $228 for the preceding six months, according to the release. However, about the time the $72,920.58 was transferred into Dickason’s bank account, there were numerous other wire transfers to the account totaling about $6.5 million.

The Atlanta Police Department is investigating reports of additional fraud victims, according to the WCSO.

A warrant for Dickason was submitted in September 2019 for grand theft. On April 6, 2020, Dickason was disbarred by the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Once officers approached and confirmed his identity, Dickason was taken into custody and taken to the DeKalb County Jail. He was extradited and booked into the Walton County Jail on Feb. 10.

His bond was set at $15,000, He was released on bond the following day.
