Fishermen for Christ, Culvers and Shoreline Church step up for Destin giveaway
DESTIN — In the last four or five weeks, organizations, restaurants and other businesses have stepped up to help one another out during the COVID-19 crisis in our area.
This week, Culvers, along with the Fishermen for Christ and Shoreline Church, set up on the harbor front at Destin Fishing Fleet Marina to give away free food vouchers to those “who make their living on the water.”
“We’re just thankful to be able to participate and help out,” said Luke Bryant, owner of Culvers in Miramar Beach.
The vouchers were good for one free meal.
“They are good for any value basket at Culvers ... any sandwich or fish, or burger ... pretty much whatever you want with a drink,” he said.
Bryant said they are usually required to put an expiration date on the coupons, but he said they’ll be good anytime at the restaurant in Miramar Beach at the corner of Holiday Road and U.S. 98.
“It was just a way to give back and we’re thankful to be able to do it,” he said.
Between Shoreline Church and the Fisherman for Christ they had 400 coupons to give out on the harbor.
On Tuesday afternoon between 3 and 5 p.m., the group had a tent set up where folks could just drive by and pick up a coupon for everyone in their family.
“The people that funded it wanted to take care of people on the waterfront,” said Pastor Eric Partin of Shoreline Church.
Not just the fisherman, but all those that make their living on the water, he said.
Basically anybody that has a vessel and participates in the annual Blessing of the Fleet in Destin was welcome to come and pick up a voucher, said Father Mike Hesse with Fishermen for Christ.
They had fishermen and deckhands show up in trucks, cars and even a few walk-ups.
When it was all said and done the group had given away more than 130 vouchers to feed 50-plus families.
The group still has vouchers left for those fishermen who couldn’t make it down on Tuesday.
Father Hesse said they are possibly looking at passing out the rest of the vouchers at the 63rd annual Blessing of the Fleet on May 21. There will be no fish fry or service under the tent, but there will be blessing of the boats.
