Okaloosa deputies seeking suspect in fatal Bennett's End shooting; $8,000 reward for info

FORT WALTON BEACH — A reward of up to $8,000 has been offered for information that helps solve the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in Wright on Monday afternoon.

Deputies responded about 2 p.m. to a report of shots fired on Bennett's End near Willow Bend Boulevard.

Deputies found Stoney Mathis dead on a wooded traffic island in front of his home on Bennett's End on Monday.

Deputies found victim Stoney Mathis, 28, dead on a wooded traffic island in front of his home. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to OCSO officials. An autopsy will be scheduled.

OCSO officials said they received reports of two cars seen in the vicinity before the shooting. One was a light silver/gray Kia Soul with two Black men inside. The other was a dark gray sedan.

The OCSO announced Tuesday morning that investigators are seeking Aaron Dwayne Dawson for questioning in connection with the slaying.

On Tuesday afternoon, the OCSO announced the Florida Sheriff's Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program (FSA CAAP) and Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers will pay enhanced reward money for information leading to the identity of the shooter/shooters responsible for the slaying.

Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $3,000 reward for information and the FSA CAAP has chipped in another $5,000. Crime Stoppers is 100% anonymous and users never have to give their name.

Authorities are seeking this sedan in connection with the fatal shooting of Stoney Mathis on June 7.

The anonymous tip must come through Crime Stoppers to be eligible for the $8,000 reward.
