• The big movies opening this week are “Sinister 2,” an R sequel in this horror franchise; “American Ultra,” an R comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart; and “Hitman: Agent 47,” an R thriller starring Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto and Ciarán Hinds.

• Hey, hey, Poet’s Day is Friday! You don’t have to be back in school to appreciate poetry or have fun with it. Write a poem or two — don’t worry if it’s bad — have a haiku contest, read some poetry or do some research on a poet for the upcoming school year. Plan a poetry party for Saturday or Sunday.

• Monday marks a dark day for many — it’s Pluto Demoted Day. If you’re a fan of the ex-planet, take the weekend to learn more about it, or try to educate others on Pluto and space. NASA recently released the first real photos of the dwarf planet, so there’s some new, cool stuff out there.

• Most schools have kicked off the new year, so take this weekend to celebrate the end of summer. Go swimming, go on a picnic, get some ice cream, head for the beach — just do something summery and say goodbye to another great season in the sun.

• In sports, this weekend we have the Little League Baseball World Series, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, Major League Soccer and preseason football. That’s right — it’s football season again! Check the newspaper for schedules.
