Seven-year-old Tricia is making progress since her move to a Mission village in the Philippines, gaining weight by eating nutritional foods, receiving medications and starting school for the first time.

Mission Love Seeds, The Destin United Methodist Women and Generous Heart Ministry have joined forces to help seven-year-old Tricia who has a cleft palate and lives in the Philippines

Tricia, along with her mother, father and four siblings, were recently moved from the remote village where they lived. The family traveled by plane to be near better doctors, specialists and to be closer to the Mission Love Seeds office in Antipolo City, Philippines

The decision to move Tricia and her family was made after learning the doctors were doing very little to help Tricia, Tricia kept running high fevers and doctors couldn’t explain the cause. Tricia was already underweight and malnourished, but doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with her.

As soon as Tricia and her family arrived in Antipolo, she was taken to see new doctors. Tricia tested positive for tuberculosis. Tricia’s mother also tested positive for TB. Both Tricia and her mother will need to take medication for at least six months.

In the beginning our concern was only for Tricia and how the mission could assist her and provide vitamins and special nutritious foods so she could pass the screening to receive a free surgery. We quickly learned we could not provide food for Tricia without providing for all her brothers and sisters. The family lives in extreme poverty and on many days the kids eat less than a hand full of rice.

Because of the many prayers and financial support from DUMW, Generous Heart Ministry and a hand full of other supporters, we are able to provide food for the entire family on a weekly basis and still continue to provide vitamins and special nutritious foods for Tricia.

Tricia still has a long ways to go before she can have surgery to repair her cleft palate. What we thought would take a few months for Tricia to gain weight and pass the screening, could now take up to a year.

In order for Tricia to receive a free surgery she needs to gain at least 30 pounds. When we first leaned about Tricia and her condition she weighed only 15 pounds, and a child her age should be around 52 pounds.

We are so thankful for organizations like The DUMW and Generous Heart Ministry. Both Generous Heart Ministry and the DUMW have partnered with Mission Love Seeds in the past. Generous Heart Ministry fully funded a school in the Philippines, built houses for families living in poverty, supported an orphanage in Haiti and took part in many other projects.

DUMW have provided funds to ship boxes of clothes and school supplies to kids living in poverty in the Philippines. They provided funds to build a house, provided hundreds of new Barbie Dolls for kids among other things.

Both organizations are always there to help, whether it is to provide supplies for a natural disaster or provide a school or house for a community. Mission Love Seeds knows they can always count on Jane Carron, Generous Heart Ministry, and the ladies of Destin United Methodist Women.

The Bible clearly tells us “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
