Happy New Year and welcome Destin Snowbirds

Sigrid J. Aeschleman

Happy New Year everyone. May 2016 be a year of health, peace, goodwill and prosperity for everyone. On the emerald coast, the holiday visitors have departed and the influx of winter residents has begun. As the big registration begins Monday, Jan. 4, from 1-3 p.m. at The Roost, the line of registrants will give us an indication as to how many “senior breakers” will be present this season.

Joining the Destin Snowbird Club and becoming active in both the organization and in the events that are provided is an excellent way to meet new people, to renew old acquaintances if you have been here before, and to find connections to people who may have similar interests as you. Networking with people from your state or province and mingling with people you may not have met before can be entertainment by itself.

Activities are planned with variety in mind, beginning with social gatherings, (holiday parties and celebrations, participation in local community activities such as the Destin Parade), harbor boat party cruises aboard the Southern Star Party Boat (Jan. 25 and Feb. 8), TGIT Parties (Thank Goodness It’s Tuesday) on Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16, a Mixer Party on Saturday, Jan. 30, The Soundsations Benefit Concert on Feb. 7, the New Orleans Mardi Gras Trip Jan. 29-31, the Fashion Show on Feb. 22, weekly trips to the casino on Fridays through March 4, as well as golf tournaments and the Third Annual Snowbird Cup (Destin vs. Walton Snowbirds) on Sunday, Feb. 21. All of these events, and more, are open to members of the club and the Destin Snowbirds welcomes all.

In addition to the special events outlined above, snowbirds can enjoy bowling, bridge, computer club, friendship club, fishing tours, euchre, mahjong, pickleball, poker, quilting, skeet shooting, tennis and writer’s group among others. Visit our informative website at www.destinsnowbirds.org and weekly announcements in The Destin Log (Saturday) and the Northwest Florida Daily News (Sunday) to keep updated.

Attending weekly meetings of the Destin Snowbirds at The Roost (in the Destin Community Center) will help you become acquainted with all of the activities that are available to members of the club for $8 per person. There will be opportunities to sign up for many events and activities at the big registration on Monday. Members who have already joined the club are urged to come to registration on Monday, may by-pass the line if wearing your badge, and may sign up for the activities in the gym. Some activities are first come-first serve, so arriving early may be beneficial.

The following information is part of last week’s article on the upcoming registration on Jan. 4 at the Destin Community Center. You may see all of the information in the Snowbird News section of our web site (www.destinsnowbirds.org) at the top of the page under the article of Dec. 26. Details concerning the registration process can be found there. The restaurants on The Boardwalk of Okaloosa Island (Crab Trap, Floyd’s, Black Pearl, and Rockin’ Taco’s), Surf Hut, Jim & Nick’s Bar-B-Que, 790 on the Gulf, Chick-fil-A, and Bubba Gump have all confirmed to be in the “food room” at the Roost on registration day. Samples of their menu can be tasted once snowbirds have registered and have their badge on (this is a member’s only privilege).

Lockers will be open to arriving snowbirds on Jan. 2 from 8-9 a.m. and Jan. 4 from 2-3 p.m. The next locker dates are Jan. 9 and 16, both from 8-9 a.m.

The Singles Friendship Club will meet at Harbor Docks on Jan. 5 after the 11 a.m. meeting concludes. Come have lunch with others to make new friends.

Come join us at registration on Monday from 1-3 p.m. and at one of our two meetings on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and make the Destin Snowbird Club your “Destin family” while you are here. We look forward to seeing you and welcome to the Emerald Coast.
