Destin Fire Boat finds new home on Calhoun Avenue for quicker access to Crab Island
DESTIN — Gone are the days of navigating snarled summer traffic to launch, as the Destin Fire Control District's fire boat has moved from Destin Harbor to the former Bay House on Calhoun Avenue.
Poised at the end of a 240-foot dock, the boat and its crews are now seconds from busy Crab Island.
Engine 10 has also been stationed on-site to give the west side of Destin a fire station after years of going without one.
"Quicker response means better outcomes for patients," said Destin Fire Capt. Felix Romero.
The Fire Control District intends to use $1.2 million in revenue from district impact fees charged to property developers to pay for a concrete-block building that will house the station’s firetruck and other equipment and to renovate Bay House into firefighters' living quarters.
