Boaters find body of Indiana tourist who drowned while swimming to beach from Crab Island

DESTIN — A man visiting from Indiana died Tuesday in an apparent drowning near Crab Island. 

The 46-year-old from Columbus, Indiana, said he was going to swim to the beach from Crab Island near Destin around 9:40 a.m. and was later found floating in the water by boaters, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The man and others rented a pontoon boat at 9 a.m. and anchored at Crab Island about 20 minutes later.

The man told them he was going to swim to the beach to collect shells, but when he didn’t return, they began searching and contacted the OCSO to report him missing. 

A short time later boaters found the man dead in the water south of Destin’s Marler Bridge, OCSO reported.
