Owchewawa … At 78 degrees, a parked car can reach 160 degrees inside within minutes. Leave your dog home.

A Hungry Dog Park kitty? Yip Yap … This kitty needs funds. Destin Dog Park will be putting in a drain by the water feature. It will cost about $300-$400 for gravel and metal grate to cover drain and the labor. A fundraiser table will be set up at the Dog Park Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. If you want to help, contact nikki-johnson@hotmail.com. This Park is yours and it relies solely upon your donations to maintain. Sign up to be a member of the Friends of the Destin Dog Park group. No hunting dog needed to donate to the Dog Park, just go to www.thecityofdestin.com and click on Parks & Recreation and click on Facilities then scroll down to The Destin Dog Park PAY PAL.

Barkriffic Group … The next “Friends of the Destin Dog Park” meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, June 16, in the small conference room in the City Annex. Join the group and Bark All About it to your friends.

It’s a Dogs “night” Life?  … Thank you Melissa Aiken (owner of Fish Heads) for holding the May fundraiser to benefit the dog park. Close to $500 was raised for our night lights for the dog park. Let’s get more fundraisers!

In the Dog House? … Long gone are the days when Snoopy slept in the back yard on a dog house. The pet business is a multibillion dollar industry. So why do long term rentals restrict a dog’s size? Owners should capitalize on those stats. A 30 lb. animal with behavior issues can do more damage than one big ole well-trained 40 lb. dog. (Which is about the weight of two sacks of potatoes) An extra security deposit should do the trick. People needing housing should not have to give up a furry family member of 10 years just because he exceeds the weight limit. Property owners who will lease to people with dogs that happen to exceed 30 lbs. please email me your info at mustlovedogs@cox.net  to share. There are too many homeless pets out there, so be a good Samaritan and let Snoopy stay.

Ms. Pawtogenic … At Pet Smart adoption day I saw cute dogs at Pet Welfare seeking homes. Call 850-678-5066.

Do Dogs Mourn? We know about the stages of human grief but did you know that dogs react from the loss of a person or canine companion too?  US News & World Report says dogs may mourn as deeply as humans do.

A Tale of Two Dogs … They were raised together and played together. After one passed, the other dog began to whine by the back door often, which he never did before. The owner watched her dog from the window and saw him head straight to the spot where his friend was buried. He’d lie down on the spot until his name was called to come back inside.

Howl at the Moon? When my dog Misty passed, her son Bear called for her nightly. He would sit in the yard, look up at the moon and howl a few long eerie bellows. I think he thought Misty was lost and was calling for her so that she could find her way home. It’s easy for us to forget that we do have the descendants of wolves’ right in our own living rooms.

The Scent … After another dog lost his companion, he’d often sit next to a dresser where his furry friends’ collar and ashes were kept, and soulfully whimper. The owner finally had to put the collar and box of ashes on the floor for him to be quiet. A new rescued dog cured him of his deep attachment to the ashes.

Chow for Now … Remember that HarborWalk and The Village of Baytowne Wharf allow you to bring your friendly furry kids anytime. Harry T’s restaurant located at the harbor has special dock side seating for you and Fido too. We don’t want to wear out our welcome, so make sure you walk your dog for 20 minutes before leaving your home before visiting one of these wonderful destinations.
