POOCH SCOOP: Happy Independence Day but don’t forget Fido

Independence Day is fun for everyone, except for your furry friends. Dogs associate the fireworks with thunder, lightning and danger. More dogs run away on this day than any other day of the year. If your pampered pooch becomes a nervous wreck hearing fireworks, speak to your vet as he/she may be able to give your dog calming meds. Dogs in fear have been known to break through windows to flee from the loud noise of exploding fireworks.  Leaving a radio on when I leave on the Fourth, seems to do the trick.

Ear Muffs for Fido? Nope, just begin to desensitize your dog all year long by putting on a CD of the Sounds of Nature and Thunderstorms for an hour a day. Relax and pet your dog during this time and dole out a few real treats, like cheese or baked chicken pieces. The dog will eventually grow to know that these sounds are like a dinner bell and lots of hugs, food and fun will follow.

Tuckers Tales … Harry Truman once said; “Children and dogs are as necessary to the welfare of the country as Wall Street and the railroads.”

Yip Yap and Leashes Off to our Friends of the Dog Park who collected donations for the French drain project and to the many residents and visitors who came out to make those donations. I hope last months “Scoop” helped boost those turn out numbers. The “friends” collected a whopping $742. It’s obvious that people appreciate our Destin Pooch Park and wants to help keep it well maintained. Thank you Friends.

Lacy’s Licks or LIKEs on FB. Check out the new Facebook Page called “Friends of the Destin Dog Park.” Their Goal is to use this FB page to howl about upcoming events and meetings for the dog park. So bark all about it to your friends and “Like” on Facebook.

Pawti-Gras in the Summer? For a barkingly pawsome good time, don your best Big Easy Pawti-Gras duds and bring your furry friend dressed to impress. The Fat Tuesday parades are held every Tuesday night at the HaborWalk Village. People with pooches are always welcome. The Friends of the Destin Dog Park will be holding fundraisers there, so please volunteer. The plan is to meet at Fishheads, which is on the left of the zip line at the harbor at 7:30 p.m. to decorate for the parade. Updates posted on Facebook.

Every Party needs a Pooper — NOT! Take your dog for a nice brisk 20 minute walk before you go to any public place that allows you to bring your dog. We don’t want to wear out our welcome nor do we want to be “Scoopin les Poopin.” This pre-visit walk will also calm your dog so he’s not so excited upon arrival and will be easier to manage in a crowd.

Go Fetch the Paper … to find great coupons, and advertise your business under The Pooch Scoop News for only 25 bucks. Hot diggity dog, now that’s a deal to howl about. Woof: Businesses do not need to be dog related. Call the Destin Log for Bone-in-One ad details.
