Pooch Scoop: Tricks for Treats
Tuckers Tales — A cheerful heart is good medicine and nobody can cheer your heart better than your dog.
A Dog Fight? Elections get ugly. Don’t listen to the whining, just compare their resumes and vote smart.
The Doggy Bag — While hunting around town for a treat for my old dog, I walked into this cute little shop for pampered pooches. The security guard was a 14-year-old pooch named Nikki, and I told her not to get up on my account. To my surprise, it was also a doggie bakery. Go snoop around and pick up a treat, no tricks required. Visit The Doggy Bag at 34904 Emerald Coast Parkway in Destin or visit the website at www.thedoggybag.com. Call 850-837-9833.
Woof — Don’t Miss Pooch Palooza — Mark your calendars for 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the Destin dog park as it’s going to be a howling good time for pooches and people. The event is free and will start off with a blessing of the dogs. Need shots? PAWS will be offering rabies shots for $5 and microchipping for $10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Do you want to be a vendor? Call Barb at 850-837-4242.
The Scoop of Events — Pets Behave will give an AKC Good Citizen demonstration at 10:30 a.m. EASYTRAIN will provide a dog Agility Demonstration at 11. You and your dog can participate in a Follow the Leader competition at 11:30, followed by PetSmart’s Importance of Good Grooming presentation. Doxie races will be next, and then at 12:30 we will see the Hurlburt Air Force K-9 Unit in action. At 1 p.m., EASYTRAIN will do a demonstration and at 1:30 the animal rescue service dog presentations will begin, followed by a Treat for Trot game. Stay until 2 p.m., as our Okaloosa Sheriff’s office K-9 unit will dazzle us with their highly skilled canine cops. At 2:30 the silent auction and Tricky Tray Raffle start.
Paw Script — This is a great family fun event where your dog is welcome. There will be vendor booths, food, rescue organizations, raffles, face painting for the kids and stencils for dogs by PetSmart and more. And as always, donations for the Destin Dog Park are always appreciated.
Go Fetch the News — Pooch lover? Be a Destin Dog Park volunteer, as they need about 25 volunteers for this Pooch Palooza event. The pooch group meets at 6 p.m. in the small conference room at the City Annex building, next to the Dog Park. Call 850-837-4242 (12: 30 to 4:30 p.m.) and ask for Barb for details.
Beware Big Dawgs — Yip, yap, and howl all about it, as the big dog section at the Destin Dog Park will be closed through approximately Oct. 17 for the brick paver installation.
Lacy’s Licks — It’s not over until the fat dog howls. Dogs can have strokes, so if you find your old dog stumbling, off balance, seemingly confused or leaning to one side, seek veterinary care fast. We may need just a little support from you for the next few weeks, but we can recover quickly.
Chow for now and have a Yappy and Safe Halloweenie.
