POOCH SCOOP: The pooches are coming

P.A. DeFrenza
“Run for Fun” at the Pooch Palooza at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the Destin Dog Park. SPECIAL TO THE LOG

Pooch Palooza — Dog or no dog, this event is fun for everyone at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Adults, children, dogs, and even people without pooches can enjoy the great fun. This event is free and starts off with a Blessing of the Dogs, followed by canine demonstrations, OCSO K-9 cops, training tips, Pooch N Pal games, and vendors will be there with food, merchandise and fun things for the two legged kids. Go to Friends of The Destin Dog Park on Facebook for photos and the bigger scoop on all the events.

Dog Gone Viral? — Howl all about it on Facebook as last month the Scoops “pawsome project” had 24 shares on Facebook and it reached more than 7,100 people. We love Barkriffic donations to Destin Dog Park.

Got Shots? — PAWS will be offering rabies shots for $5 and microchipping for $10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Luv Dogs? — Be a Destin Dog Park volunteer. About 25 volunteers are needed for the Pooch Palooza event. The Friends of the Destin Dog Park is a fun group to join, so call Barb at 850-837-4242 to join.

Go Fetch — Want to keep updated on news and events at the Destin Dog Park? Go to “Friends of the Destin Dog Park” on Facebook and share. No hunting required for The Pooch Scoop News if you get the Destin Log newspaper delivered or online. “The Pooch Scoop News” is printed on the first Wednesday of each month.

Dog Health Insurance? — Don’t wait until it’s too late. Check out dog health insurance options with Dave Morrow at Allstate at 650-0600 and tell him you saw it in the Pooch Scoop and share on FB.

Dog Estate Planning? — Who will care for your furry kids if something should suddenly happen to you? Hunting around town, I found “The Will Lawyer” in Destin. Mr. Kilpatrick offers free estate planning seminars and private consultations. Don’t put off making a will — your family will thank you and your furry friends will need a guardian. Speak with people now to see who would be willing to care for your dog. If you have a will, it can be amended to add in provisions for your dog’s care. Set aside some money for the caretaker, as food, shots, flea/tick and heartworm preventatives and grooming fees are expensive. About $75 a month should be earmarked for the dog's care and its remaining lifespan. Call Destin attorney Bill Kilpatrick at 850-650-7299 for a free estate planning consultation.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Thanks for giving us our faithful furry canine friends. You created animals to serve us but no other than the dog has adapted itself so intricately around our daily needs and busy lives. It may be no coincidence that the word dog is actually the word God spelled backwards. Yappy Thanksgiving.
