LETTER: Butterflies need our help in their journey to Old Mexico

The Destin Log

This summer the Destin Tree Board has encouraged us to build our own butterfly gardens in our backyards. Mine has worked out wonderfully.  I ordered some bushes and flowers that have bloomed all summer. I have lots of butterflies and even drew the largest one I have ever seen — at least 3-4 inches wide. Attracting butterflies is easy. The first step is to create a watering place and a covering during bad weather. Then acquire flowers that draw butterflies such as sunflowers or coreopsis, also called tickseeds. You can see examples growing along the road. We also have four plots at the library. Contact any member of the tree board to donate plants, which will keep our butterflies fed. We are hoping to get our school children interested in the effort to help us next spring. For now, please have water available and food to build their energy while they pass through our town.
