LETTER: TDC funds needed

The Destin Log

Another busy and successful tourist season has come to an end in Destin.

Visitors flocked to the area to enjoy the warm weather, beautiful beaches, great dining and the safe family atmosphere.

As the plans are put in place for 2016, we see that the Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport is trying to bring another carrier to the area. This will give visitors the flexibility to travel to the area and possible extend their stay.

As a resident of Destin, I have noticed that the season is getting longer. Just this year the Destin Fire Control District, which is responsible for beach safety, had to extend its season to protect the visitors who are here thru October. It is true that the Tourist Development Council does contribute to the beach safety program, but the budget of the Destin Fire Control District and the Sherriff office are being strained.

I feel it is time for the TDC to start paying more money towards public safety and not leave the burden to the taxpayer. The tourist industry is growing every year and so are the problems faced by our first responders and their leaders. If we want to maintain a safe place for families to come and vacation, then we need to have our first responders equipped to handle any type of emergency.

I read the article in the paper of the joint training in Destin last week. It cost money to take the first responders out of the field to participate in this training. This training is a must if our area ever faces a high-rise fire.

The Sherriff’s Office is also in need of help. These two departments need more equipment, more manpower and the help of the TDC.
