LETTER: Step it up, DC
I read with interest your April 5 USA Today headline story, "IRS's outdated system could delay checks."
My reaction — typical Washington insiders — give us a new system, more money, etc, then we might get the work done. After all this is a big imposition on us DC folks.
Well, that's why they hate Donald Trump. He makes unreasonable demands that they go to extremes to work for the people. Not a particularly catchy idea for the DC cocktail party circuit. If some checks come out late I will understand as long as the IRS goes to 7-day, 24-hour operations to bust a gut on behalf of the people who need it most.
However, if they run normal shifts and everybody is gone on Friday by 5 p.m. — sack the entire management and contract out the work to someone who understands meeting customer demands.
I spent a career in the electric utility business and it was often "inconvenient" to work weekends and holidays, our customers expected excellent service 24 by 7. The utility industry continues to provide such service all over America without much drama.
Time for the Washington folks to step it up and become part of the solution.

First of all I want to say thank you to all the first responders and medical personnel that are on the front lines during this pandemic, but there's another group that I don't think gets enough of our gratitude that's keeping our world from coming apart at the seams ... our grocery store workers!
They're working day and night to restock the shelves and expose themselves to hoards of panicked shoppers and usually the only words they hear are, "Do you have any more toilet paper?"
Be sure to tell them thanks and watch the surprise on their face!
