The Destin Middle School Marlin track teams placed second in a tri-meet with Meigs and Lewis last week.

"The girls and boys teams both performed well against some of the top teams in the county," said Destin Coach Ben Kackley.

"At this point in the season there are often setbacks," he added. "On the boys and girls teams we were missing runners due to injury or absence, and it makes a difference in our overall performance."

Destin's  No. 1 distance runner Kyle Ferris is out with a leg injury.

"We wish him a speedy recovery," Kackley said. "I know he is anxious to return to the team.

"It's unfortunate for the team but also gives others a chance to step up and fill in. I was proud of both teams willingness to help out where they were needed. You have to be flexible as a track runner because injuries and absences are unpredictable. We have some great runners that are always ready to fill in when called upon."

Up next for the Destin track teams is a 4 p.m. meet on April 24 at home with Pryor and Shoal River.
