Lady Marlins win, boys fall to Liza Jackson

Scott Martineau

The Destin Marlin tennis teams split with Liza Jackson in a recent match at Fort Walton Beach Tennis Center.

Being so evenly matched, the play of the No. 1 player on each squad seems to dictate how the rest of the squad will fair for the day. Nowhere was that more evident than in the girl’s singles No. 1 match that started the day last week at the Tennis Center.

The score was 30-30 in a 4-4 match for the Destin Marlins girls No. 1 singles Megan Hovenden against her opponent Parker Ketterling. A large crowd gathered around the court at the Tennis Center to see which way the match would turn.

After a long rally, Hovenden hit a cross-court topspin forehand deep into the corner landing just inside the baseline that was unreturnable. That point gave Hovenden the opening she needed and she then cruised to a 6-4 victory.

The  win led to victories in singles by Ashton Geary 6-2, and Sky Rivera 6-4 over their opponents but the match for the girls team victory would come down to a doubles match later in the day.

Melisse Martineau and Ashton Geary would have to pull out a victory if the girl’s tennis team would have any chance at a team win.

Martineau and Geary we’re up 3-2 but down 40-love in a critical game of the match. With nerves of steel and good poaching skills, Geary and Martineau snuck back into the game and won it to go up 4-2. After a few more hard fought games the Marlins doubles pair emerged with a 6-3 victory and secured the girls team win.

The boy’s team did not fair as well against Liza Jackson. Losing all their singles and doubles matches to a tough Lion Squad.
