Coach Kim Berry knows what it takes to have a good cheer team. She’s been the coach of the Destin Marlins Cheer Team for the last five years and she likes what she sees this year.

“We’re a young team compared to last, but we have an amazing talent level. We have seven sixth graders this season, three seventh graders and five eight graders. These girls pick up the routines really fast and are very coachable,” Berry said.

But talent alone does not make a good cheer team, according to Coach Berry.

“A good cheer team consists of positive attitudes, hard work, dedication to cheer, good role models in both school and community, and lots of practice. We practice before school from 7 to 8:30 a.m. These girls run a mile or more, do stretches, stunts, cheers and chants and take at least one tumbling class each week so they have to be prepared to work hard,” Berry said.

The Destin Marlins Cheer Team kicks off their season this Thursday cheering, chanting, stunting and flying to support the boy’s football team.

As the cheer team takes the field this year Coach Berry has distinct goals for the squad.

"My goals for the team are for them to improve and get better at their cheerleading skills each week. I expect them to all be able to tumble, stunt, jump and remember our chants and cheers. They also must look flawless at games and performances,” Berry said.

"This first night I want to see if they can get the crowd involved in supporting the Destin Middle School football team. I want to hear some noise. After all, that’s their job and I always expect them to do their job."

The families of the cheer team members and their sponsors financially support the DMS Cheer Team.
