Cohen takes to fairways in state tournament

Tyler Cohen gets in a little practice Tuesday morning before hitting the course.

Destin's Tyler Cohen is teeing it up this week for the Fort Walton Beach Vikings in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2A Golf Finals in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Cohen, 15-year-old son of Cliff and Kim Cohen, hit the course at The Mission Inn Resort on Tuesday and Wednesday in hopes of scoring big for the Vikings.

"I like the course … it's difficult, but fun," Cohen said after shooting a practice round in South Florida Monday. "I'm excited to be here."

The Fort Walton Beach sophomore, who was in the top three when he was at Destin Middle School, has been swinging the clubs for the past five-and-half years.

"I worked hard all year and played good at the right times" to make it to the state tournament, Cohen said.

At the finals, Cohen will be scored on a combined 36 holes across two days of play.

"I know there's going to be some tough holes, but if I play my game … it will be good," Cohen said.

He says he does his best work with his wedge, chipping it onto the green. However he can also knock it off the tee about 265 yards.

"My bag is all mixed," he said about his clubs.

He was slated to tee off in Round 1 at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
