The Destin Lady Marlins took an early lead and then held on for a 12-9 win over the Bruner Spartans in girl’s softball action Monday afternoon in Fort Walton Beach.

"Honestly we jumped on them, and then started giving them runs," said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon. "We started letting them have plays … they had a good defense."

In the first inning, Destin jumped out to a 6-0 lead and by the end of the fourth the Marlins led 10-2.

In the fifth, Bruner staged a comeback scoring five runs and then added two more in the sixth before Destin shut them down.

"There girls were very disciplined at the plate. They didn't chase a lot. Our pitchers had to work a little bit more today than they are used to," Cahoon said.

Gaby Nix and Madalyn Phillips shared pitching duties for the Marlins.

"And I let some of my bench players come in and play. Overall they did good. They made it a close game. A win is a win," she said.

For the game, Marlins with multiple hits were Gaby Nix with a double and two singles, and Nickie Cobble and Jordan Malave with two hits each.

Up next for Destin is a 4 p.m. game at home against the Lewis Falcons of Valparaiso.
