More than 30 youth participated in the first day of a Basketball Skills Camp at the Destin Community Center Monday evening.

The camp will continue today and Friday for ages 3-6 from 5:30 to 6:30 and ages 7-15 from 6:30 to 8:30.

"It's basically an introduction for the young ones," said Pat Markey, of the city of Destin's parks and recreation department.

"They are learning to play with each other … getting an awareness of their surroundings and the ball."

During the three-day camp youth will learn the fundamentals of basketball such as passing, shooting, dribbling and sportsmanship.

With the young ones, the parents had a chance to get involved as a cheerleader or assisting with the skills.

Markey said they are hoping that the camp gets the children "intrigued" and will hopefully play basketball in the fall.

Foremost, "we're trying to make sure the kids have fun," he said.
